Zombie
Zombie is the unofficial nickname of the hero Undying in Dota. The character's name is Dirge. Previously, during the Dota Allstars era, he used a zombie model from the Human faction's story mission “The Culling.” Despite the change in his official name, the old name stuck and is still actively used by players. In addition, Undying's voicelines contain numerous references to zombie games and movies:
- Undying mentions the Left 4 Dead series several times, naming specific infected characters, campaign names, and even the game itself. One of the most notable references is Undying's phrase “No dead are safe from Blueheart Bob” which is very similar to the famous graffiti phrase “No zombie is safe from Chicago Ted” from Left 4 Dead.
- In addition, when meeting Spirit Breaker, the hero utters the phrase “Charger!”, which is a reference to a mutant from that game series. Similarly, Bounty Hunter (Hunter!), Venomancer (Spitter!), and Alchemist (Jockey!). Also, when killing a hero, the hero may utter the phrase “Left for dead”
- Undying also references the Half Life series in a line addressed to Tinker (“For Lamar”). Dr. Kleiner, voiced by the same actor as Tinker, has a pet Headcrab named Lamar. Headcrabs are small, parasitic creatures that attach themselves to the head of their victims, after which the victims turn into zombies.
- Undying's taunt to Invoker, "Carl? Is that you?“ is a reference to a leaked list of changes for version 6.72 (which turned out to be fake), where Invoker's name ‘Kael’ was mistakenly translated as ”Carl.“ It can also be considered a reference to the TV series ”The Walking Dead.“
- The line ”Shop smart“ is a reference to the movie ”Army of Darkness"
